Clause 3 – How to understand the definition of “dangerous malfunction”
dangerous malfunction: unintended operation of the appliance that may impair safety.
The equipment itself does not operate as specified and may endanger safety. Such as fans, the starting capacitor of the internal AC asynchronous motor has failed in the form of a short circuit or an open circuit; in the case of air-conditioners, the outlet of the indoor-side drain pipe has been blocked, resulting in a failure to drain the water and consequently an overflow of water.
The key point here is to understand the “unintended operation”. The antonym of “unintended” is “intended”. Generally speaking, there is no requirement in standard for “intended operation”.
Here, let me give you a horrible example. If someone uses an electric iron to hit another person’s head, the standard does not require that even if we use the electric iron, we should not injure the person’s head.
