Clause 3 – How to understand the definition of “type X attachment”

type X attachment: method of attachment of the supply cord such that it can easily be replaced
Note 1 to entry: The supply cord may be specially prepared and only available from the manufacturer or its service agent. A specially prepared cord may include a part of the appliance.

First, this definition is for the supply cord. Second, according to the notes, the cord can only be obtained from the manufacturer or its service agency. Third, it is mentioned here that the structure of the supply cord is easy to replace. From the notes, we can understand that if this cord can be bought from the ordinary home appliance accessories market, the supply cord of the rice cooker

shown in the example figure above does not actually belong to the supply cord mentioned here. Finally, the power cord may also have part of the appliance. Type X attachment needs to be easy to replace. As shown in the figure below,

the supply cord is connected to the polar terminal. This connection method can be completed by using an ordinary flat-blade screwdriver. It is an easy-to-install type, so it can be defined as Type X attachment. For the same reason, if the connection of the power cord here is connected using any convenient and quick connector, it can also be defined as Type X attachment, but this structure is rarely seen. Refer to the first sentence of section 26.2, “Except for those appliances with special preparation software, appliances with Type X attachment connections and appliances connected to fixed wiring shall be provided with terminals for connection by means of screws, nuts or similar devices, unless such connection is made by soldering.” This means that screws, nuts or similar connection devices are allowed to be used to complete Type X attachment connections. Conversely, structures that use screws, nuts or similar connection devices to complete connections can be defined as Type X attachment. Brazing is also mentioned here, so we have reason to believe that brazing is also a connection method used by Type X attachment, but I personally think that brazing is not an easy connection method, so it cannot be considered a Type X attachment. If brazing is involved, we will consider soldering, which is easier than brazing, but I think that soldering is also not easy to achieve, so it is not recommended to be determined as a Type X attachment connection.
The power cord of a household rice cooker is connected to the appliance with a standard coupler. This cord with a coupler, power cord and plug is called a “cord set” as a whole. Generally speaking, the power cord of a rice cooker cannot be classified into any of the three types.

It has to be said that type X attachment is very rare now. Due to the improvement of technology and the optimization of materials, the damage of supply cord has rarely occurred, even if the supply cord is damaged, it is difficult for ordinary users to repair and replace it by themselves. Most electrical products use type Y attachment structure. When the standard defined type X attachment, many supply cords were damaged due to backward technology, so this safety rule was stipulated.
